Understand how to improve the physical wellbeing of others through a range of behaviour change interventions with this master’s programme in Health Psychology that provides an understanding of the psychological and emotional effects of health and physical illness.

The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of historical and current theories as well as different approaches within the field of health psychology. You will develop practical skills central to the work of a health psychologist, such as therapeutic skills, collaborative working, research skills, and patient and public engagement skills.

Throughout the programme, you will gain essential knowledge to encourage behavioural change in people with illness, long term health conditions or merely looking to improve their wellbeing. You will build your confidence to lead a variety of interventions and refine your research and consultancy skills, developing the best solutions to enhance your ability in this area.

With an indicative study duration of 2.5 years, this master’s degree centres on eight subject-specific core modules, with topics ranging from health related behaviour, quantitative and qualitative research methods, application of health psychology to long-term conditions, and lifespan and socio-cultural perspectives. Towards the end of the programme, you will take on a empirical project, conducting research into the topic of your choice.

Upon completion of this programme, graduates will be able to pursue careers in psychology, healthcare services, health promotion, policy environments or research, roles in health charities, pharmaceutical companies or teaching and academia. You will have the flexibility to further your education by applying for a PhD or go on to complete their Stage 2 Qualification in Health Psychology via either the Doctoral Route, or the BPS Route.

This programme is also available as a postgraduate certificate and a postgraduate diploma.

Learning and Assessments

Teaching methods
You will take part in innovative online teaching methods and a range of interesting and thought-provoking activities and exercises. Our cutting-edge learning materials are developed by tutors who are experts in their fields and who have exceptional knowledge of how to support online students. You will learn through specially designed lecturecasts, synchronous seminars, carefully curated reading lists, and asynchronous discussions to enhance peer-to-peer learning opportunities.

All teaching is delivered through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) specifically tailored for online learning. Student groups are kept in small groups, with no more than 20 in each cohort.

Assessment methods
Assessment is by coursework only – no examinations required. Assessments align with the University of Liverpool commitment to have relevant, authentic and varied activities. The authentic assessments will also contribute to the skill development sought for enhanced professional and personal objectives as well as being applicable to further careers in Health Psychology. Assessments are at regular intervals and designed to fit around employment and other commitments.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of a 2:1 class degree in psychology, equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree.
  • All applicants must provide evidence that they have an English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (academic) score of 7.5.
