With the application of artificial intelligence (AI) growing rapidly in the computer science sector and across all industries, this specialist programme will equip you with key competencies and skillsets essential to excel in your profession.

Designed to sharpen your expertise within the field, the Artificial Intelligence MSc programme will nurture your practical skills and refine your programming techniques. The Department of Computer Science has been at the forefront of key developments in computer science and has built a strong international reputation for research in artificial intelligence and algorithms. The latest Research Excellence Framework 2021 rated us 5th in the UK for world leading (4*) research outputs, and 100% of research environment rated as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 

Throughout the course, you will gain substantial understanding in core modules that focus on topics including theory and practice of AI programming and development, machine learning in practice, robotics, deep learning and natural language processing. You will also explore relevant applications and programming techniques of the discipline and gain the skills to practically apply them to a range of industries in which you could choose to pursue a career.

Foundation of knowledge aside, you will also acquire insightful skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking and research in a professional learning environment. These will enhance your CV, enabling you to improve your career prospects.

Artificial intelligence plays a major role in how intelligent systems can change the future. Graduates will see their professional prospects broadened across a vast range of careers in IT and other sectors such as software solutions, machine learning and research, particularly related to design and development of intelligent systems. Potential job titles include data scientist, AI consultant, AI developer, information strategy manager, machine learning engineer and research scientist.

 

The MSc programme is accredited by the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of meeting the further learning academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.

Learning and assessments

Teaching methods
You will take part in innovative online teaching methods and a range of interesting and thought-provoking exercises. Core information is developed by subject-leading experts in the field and closely aligned with both industry and academic best practice, underpinned by rigorous theoretical and practical topics, examples and cases. Our cutting-edge learning materials are developed by tutors who are experts in their fields and who have exceptional knowledge of how to support online students. You will learn through specially designed lecturecasts, synchronous seminars, carefully curated reading lists, and asynchronous discussions to enhance peer-to-peer learning opportunities. All teaching is delivered through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) specifically tailored for online learning. Student groups are kept in small groups, with no more than 20 in each cohort.


Assessment methods
Assessment is by coursework only – no examinations required. Assessments align with the University of Liverpool commitment to have relevant, authentic and varied activities and are designed to lead directly to enhanced professional and personal objectives as well as being appropriate to the academic discipline. Assessments are at regular intervals and designed to fit around employment and other commitments.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • A degree in computer science or a closely related subject, equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, coupled with two years relevant IT professional experience; or
  • Professional work experience in IT or related field, and/or other prior qualifications, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis


English language requirements

All applicants must provide evidence that they have an English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5.

Full tuition fee: £16,065*

This fee is fully inclusive of all costs, including all teaching materials, core textbooks, assessments and resits.

 

Full payment discount
If you choose to pay the full tuition fee upfront, you will receive an extra 5% discount.

Simple monthly payment plan is also provided to spread the cost over duration of study.

 

Regional Scholarship
A Regional Scholarship of 5% is available for students based in Hong Kong for the 2023/24 academic year.
